In last week’s Guest Column, Bob began to explain how we get our electricity in Hannibal. This week’s column will examine the merits of coal fuel versus natural gas and how that ultimately affects utility rates. As with most electric utility companies, the price of energy is what determines rates. In Hannibal, and throughout the Midwest, the cost of energy is closely related to the cost of buring coal. Most of you might not know, however, that the use of coal in the Midwest is being severely restricted by a series of new EPA rules. So how can we prepare ourselves to re-enter this very volatile energy market? Bob tackles some of these tough questions in his last column this week.
